Dietetic Intern, Lydia Lelah at the corporate site for her 6-week Nutrition Education and Counseling rotation. Lydia has been providing one-on-one nutrition counseling and nutrition education programs for the employees at the corporate location and at the Center for Nutrition here on campus.
The Center for Nutrition is an outreach and training component of the Dietetic Internship Program. Dietetic Interns provide the Nutrition Counseling services under the supervision of Christine Meissner, MS, RD, a Clinical Coordinator for the Dietetic Internship.
The dietetic interns have completed a bachelor's degree and a didactic program in dietetics prior to applying to the dietetic internship. The students have completed coursework in nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, nutrition in the life cycle, food science, food service, nutrition education, dietetic program management and community dietetics. In addition, there are a variety of required physical and social science courses that support the preparation of the dietetic intern.
Dietetic Interns come from many different undergraduate programs. They participated in a competitive national computer matching program to be a part of our program. During the program, they will complete approximately 1,248 supervised practice hours training under the supervision of Registered Dietitians. They work in healthcare, outpatient health clinics, schools, and other facilities where food and nutrition services are offered in the community.
Prior to staffing the Center for Nutrition, the intern will have completed the majority of their training in the clinical aspects of the program. The dietetic interns will be supervised in providing nutrition counseling and education services to the students at the College of Saint Elizabeth. Interns will meet one-on-one with their clients.
