Rosemont, Pa. - Today marks history for the CSE women’s lacrosse team. The Screaming Eagles had their first victory in school history against the Rosemont Ravens. The Eagles started off the game with high intensity and within three minutes of the game Meghan Murray had the first goal of the game, her first of the season. Murray would go on to score the second goal of the game at 5 minutes into the first half. Rosemont rallied back with a goal on a free position shot and then another one to tie the game 2-2. Within minutes of that, Dina Toledo would score the next three goals with assists from Cassidy Crane and Murray. At 21:42, Veronica Stawinski would have the sixth goal of the day after a solid clear attempt by the Eagles. It was not until 9:17 that Murray would score the eighth goal of the game.
The teams were five goals apart, 10-5, with Saint Elizabeth taking the lead going in to the half. Rosemont cut the lead only to three, 12-9, after Brittany Fuller scored her fifth goal of the game. With 13:48 remaining in the game, the Eagle’s defense, anchored by Latasia Peace and Estania Pierre, did not allow the Ravens to score for the rest of the game. Murray, Stawinski and Shanay Barge would have the three final goals of the game, giving the Eagles the 15-9 victory.
Murray finished the game with eight goals off of thirteen shots (ten on goal). Stawinski and Toledo finished with three goals and one assist each. Shanay Barge had her first goal of her career. Crane led the team in assists while Amy Rowe led the Screaming Eagles with six ground balls. Catherine De La Cruz was a key component in the team’s transition into attack while notching four ground balls and causing three turnovers. Barbara Beresova had eleven saves in goal.
We were all excited when the score was rising in our favor. As a team, we are making strides to accomplish goals. This win shows us that hard work really pays off and our goal is to continue on this path,” Toledo stated.
They never gave up and were constantly fighting throughout the entire game. We all had the same goal in mind and we never let up to reach that goal. They have worked so hard over the past two months and are so deserving of this victory,” Coach Ahmet Kose added.
This win leaves the Eagles 1-3 overall. Saint Elizabeth faces Ramapo College at home on March 22, 2011 at 3:00pm.
