Capozzoli Family Creating a Legacy

Morristown, N.J. (August 7, 2017) – "I felt at home immediately my first time on campus," says Maria Capozzoli, a senior legacy student who is double majoring in communication and English. "I believe the legend that when students instantly feel at ease on campus, then that's actually Saint Elizabeth welcoming them home."

However, CSE was always a home away from home for Capozzoli because her mother, Romina Capozzoli, earned both her B.A. in communication ('05) and M.S. in management ('06) from the College.

"I've been coming here ever since I was little, but I actually never considered attending myself," says Capozzoli, who didn't want to just copy her mother's actions. "But when I actually toured the campus, it just felt right. It was the only place I applied."

Since then, Maria has deeply immersed herself in all aspects of life at CSE. She's a member of the honors program, campus ministry and the Mission Council, a group that ensures students adhere to the values of the Sisters of Charity.

Capozzoli is not only the president of her class but she also produced and directed a play about Mother Seton, is a Vocation Ambassador, who encourages people to consider entering religious life, for the National Religious Vocation Conference and earned the prestigious Heritage Award. The Heritage Award is a research grant designed for students to contribute to the Center for Catholic Women's History at CSE.

Now, her brother Giuseppe Capozzoli, who received the presidential scholarship, is about to enter his freshman year.

"My mom graduated from CSE, and my sister is a senior," says Giuseppe, who is interested in studying criminal justice with a minor in business. "I wanted to keep the tradition and attend. I liked the welcoming feeling I got right away."

What is the common thread that lead all the Capozzolis to attend CSE despite their vast differences and varying interests? According to Maria, it's all about community.

"It doesn't matter if you come here as a continuing education student, like my mother, or a traditional student, like my brother and myself," says Capozzoli. "There's a lot of opportunity for growth here and, regardless of your background, the environment will be perfect for success."

After graduating, Capozzoli hopes to achieve her doctorate and eventually be welcomed back to CSE once more, but as a professor this time!
