Alumna Receives Mother Xavier Award

Morristown, N.J. (December 7, 2016) – Maureen Carroll, '59, received the College's highest honor, the Mother Xavier Award, during festivities for Founders Day in early December. The award is given annually to an alumna who demonstrates the same leadership, confidence, faith in God and zeal for the mission of the College that was Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan's – the Sister of Charity who had the vision to see a place for women to have access to higher education.

"Maureen's gift was seeing the needs of others and responding in very tangible ways," said College President Helen J. Streubert. "Her service life started with the Peace Corps where she served those in need in the Philippines. After completing two years, she knew that she would continue her commitment in service."

Over the years, Maureen went on to oversee Peace Corps operations in Africa and ultimately serve as president of the Peace Corps Alumni Foundation for the development of the Philippines.

"Maureen is a woman of distinction, never forgetting her responsibility to others based on using her gifts to make the burden of others less," Streubert concluded.

Sister Rosemary Moynihan, chair of the trustees of the College, drew parallels between the mission of the Sisters, the College and Maureen.

"Our honoree is a dynamic example of our mission which is simply to make God's love known in the world."

"I am so honored to receive this award," said Maureen. "The Sisters of Charity have so influenced my life."

Maureen, who attended both a Sisters of Charity high school as well as CSE through scholarships added, "It thrills me to see the current profile of the student body ... to know that so many will receive the same opportunities that I had. I am thrilled when I look at the diversity of the student body."

Following the award presentation, which was attended by family, friends, alumnae and leaders of the College, the annual Christmas concert, Cathedral Sounds, was held in Holy Family Chapel.
