Student Profile: Chang Karissa Xu, '16, Global Studies

Morristown, N.J. (February 22, 2016) – For Chang Karissa Xu, '16, studying at CSE was the first step toward her dream of working in international relations. A global studies major, she has always had a love for learning about different cultures and languages, as well as history.

Chang, originally from Chaohu, Anhui in Eastern China, decided to come to CSE when her aunt, who lives near Morristown, told her how great it is.

"When I came to visit in 2012, I knew it was the perfect place for me," Chang said. "The campus is beautiful and peaceful, and I feel safe here."

Upon finding out the college offered the major she had always wanted, she made the decision to apply.

Throughout her years here, Chang has had two jobs as a residence hall receptionist and a student assistant in the College Archives. She has volunteered at a nursing center packaging items such as toothpaste and soap for the homeless, and she has participated in the Christmas toy drive each year.

A recurring name on the Dean's List, she is no stranger to success. Last summer, upon returning to her hometown, Chang held an internship as a professor's assistant at a university, helping American professors adapt to Chinese life and culture.

Now, as a senior, Chang is beginning to plan out her future. She would like to return to China for one year after graduation to do research on Asian studies at China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing. After that, her plan is to go to graduate school in Washington, D.C.

One day, Chang hopes to work for a multinational company. For now, Chang is enjoying her last few months as a college student. She is a part of the international club and will perform at International Night this year. In addition, she has taken lessons in four instruments here at CSE, including violin and piano, and enjoys practicing after class.

"I feel that CSE has prepared me for the future," she said. "I truly believe in the college's motto, 'Learn today, lead tomorrow.' I feel I'm on my way to achieving my dreams."
