Morristown, N.J. (March 6, 2015) – Cheers filled the CSE gymnasium as basketball star Ashley Pledger, '16 scored her 1,000th career point in the Wednesday, February 18th game against Penn State Berks.
"The game was very exciting and interactive," Pledger said. "I didn't want to know how close I was to making the 1,000th point because it would take my mind off the game, but the cheering gave away how near I was."
Down by 15 points at the half, the CSE team was losing its momentum. Pledger explained that after she made the layup marking her 1,000th point, everything changed. The tides turned, and CSE won the game, 74-71.
Pledger is the 12th scorer in CSE basketball history to have made 1,000 points.
"I feel accomplished," she said with a grateful smile. "It feels like I reached a milestone."
The CSE double-major in justice studies and psychology thanked her coaches, teammates, and parents for their undying support that has helped her achieve this amazing accomplishment.
Sharolin Sanders '16, a fellow CSE basketball player, commented on Ashley's big-scoring moment: "When [Ashley] made her layup, I couldn't help but hug her," she said. "I [am] so proud of her; she earned it."
Along with her 1,000-point triumph, Pledger will be traveling to Italy from May 23 to June 3 with three fellow CSE teammates, Danesha Triplett, Sharolin Sanders and Alivia Roseboro. There they will compete against other basketball players from Divisions 1, 2 and 3 colleges. The program is through American International Sports Teams (AIST), which asks athletes to participate based on their statistics. Pledger was asked to play at the end of the 2014 basketball season.
This opportunity means a great deal for Pledger's athletic career: "It shows hard work pays off. Not everyone gets this opportunity, and this will open many doors for my teammates and me."
Through it all, Pledger's immense love for the game motivates her. She has played basketball as long as she can remember. From street ball, to high school basketball, Pledger simply appreciates the opportunity to play.
Here's to another 1,000 points, Ashley! Keep soaring.
