Morristown, N.J. (October 18, 2017) – "Studying at CSE has helped me understand what I want to do and the type of impact I want to make in peoples' lives," says Njeri Johnson, a current graduate student in psychology and member of CSE's class of 2015.

Johnson, of New Brunswick, began her undergraduate degree as a mathematics major at CSE but quickly transitioned to psychology after interning with the United Way of Northern New Jersey (UWNNJ). While there, she assisted with work relating to the School Culture and Climate Initiative, a joint effort of CSE and UWNJ to promote students' health and wellness from kindergarten through 12th grade. Johnson, who was responsible for importing data from these surveys, began to notice certain demographics were consistently struggling and felt an overwhelming compulsion to help.

She plans to use her master's degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in school counseling to make a difference in those demographics after graduating in May, 2018.

"It's really difficult to expect students to succeed in schools when their basic needs aren't being met," says Johnson. "I want to be a school counselor to help motivate students to succeed in school, get into college and develop careers."

Johnson was drawn to study at CSE because of the College's commitment to education through service learning. She was an active member of the Students Take Action Committee, which is a volunteer group dedicated to community outreach, social justice awareness, and leadership in the spirit of service. Her desire to embody the values of the Sisters of Charity has presently led her work at the Seeing Eye in Morristown.

"The Seeing Eye is important because it shows a population of people that can't access everyday things in the same way a person without visual impairments would," says Johnson. "However, they are still capable of being independent and the Seeing Eye fosters that independence and freedom."
