Student Profile: Ayesha Brannon, '17, Health Administration

Morristown, N.J. (November 21, 2016) – Ayesha Brannon, '17, always loved animals. She found out just how much during her fall internship at Morristown Animal Hospital.

The very first day Ayesha interned at the animal hospital, she observed a canine dental surgery, learned how to do the calculations for anesthesia and then redid the calculations to check the technician's numbers, getting four out of five correct. On the third day of her internship she witnessed another dental surgery, a neutering surgery, and a microchip insertion. Then there was the case of the dog covered in maggots.

"While I saw a lot in my first three days, there was nothing that made me sick," she explains.

She will still be pursuing her veterinary technician license after graduating CSE next year.

Brannon, who is from Vauxhall, N.J., is majoring in health administration and minoring in business administration. She feels that her education in health and business administration will help her one day in opening her own animal hospital or shelter.

The process of getting her internship was an education in itself.

"I met with Lindsey Romes, coordinator of academic internships, and we talked about what I would like to do," Ayesha explains. "From there I had to do the research and make the phone calls. I reached out to 15 animal hospitals, speaking with office managers. I received two calls back."

Her research included checking the hospitals' websites to familiarize herself with the staff and functions.

"I felt very accomplished because I knew the staff names before I even walked through the door," she explains. Morristown Animal Hospital was Ayesha's top pick.

Ayesha has become passionate about animals, especially dogs, after she lost her dog, Paco, in 2013.

"My passion has grown even stronger because one day I hope to be able to save someone else's animals that they love as much as I loved my own," Ayesha says. "Working at the animal hospital is also a good networking opportunity," she says. "Working hard and learning as much as you can will be noticed by others."

She has taken advantage of the many career-focused programs available through CSE's Experiential Learning Center run by Director Theresa Corso.

"I have attended the networking programs and even though I am a work in progress, I know what career path I am going to take and I will succeed!" says Ayesha.

A woman of many talents, Ayesha also enjoys praise dancing and singing gospel music at her hometown church. At CSE, she is an Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) student, a four-year athlete on the women's volleyball team and is a member of the Carpe Motus dance company. She is also a student ambassador and loves giving prospective students tours of the College.

"One of the students in my tour group last year is now a student at CSE. It makes me feel good that I am able to express to prospective students that CSE is a college with faculty members who are willing to help you, be there for you and care about your success," says Ayesha.

She feels that her internship is one of the best things that could happen to her in her senior year at CSE.

"She certainly has an interest and we are trying to show her as many different areas of the practice as possible," says her supervisor Joseph Reno, the practice manager at Morristown Animal Hospital. "She is enjoying her time here."

Ayesha says lastly, "through God anything is possible!"
