Student Profile: Amy Cooper, '14, Sociology/Early Childhood Education

Morristown, N.J. (May 27, 2014) – Amy Cooper, '14, sociology and early childhood education, explored perceptions while at the College of Saint Elizabeth.

Cooper, a transfer student from County College of Morris, came to CSE where she quickly fell in love with the atmosphere, the seamless transfer process, the programs, and the athletics.

At CSE, Cooper transitioned from one major to two, and added a special education certification. She enjoyed studying people and societies, and felt that sociology would be a good fit for her.

"Sociology helps me realize that there is a whole population that cannot function at a 'normal' level and we, as a society, need to find ways to make life easier for this population."

As a double major, Cooper's dream job is to become a special education teacher. Her primary goal is to work with autistic children, and to help make them feel comfortable in society. This goal stemmed from a babysitting position Cooper held for a nine-year-old autistic child, and led to her interest in all different parts of the autism spectrum, including its effect on day-to-day functioning.

With the additional focus on sociology, the Roxbury, N.J., native found many ways to interact with others and understand society firsthand by taking part in many campus organizations. She was vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and co-president of Kappa Delta Pi.

Opportunities and experiences at CSE helped Cooper prepare for the future. "I've gained the confidence to stand up in front of people and be the leader of a group, and take charge."

Whether this is for an extracurricular activity, on the volleyball court, or in preparation for student teaching, Cooper is ready. She said that she feels her background in sociology will help her to better "understand the students I will encounter."

Of her time at CSE, Cooper said "I absolutely love it!"
