Notable NJ Politicians Visit CSE

Morristown, N.J. (May 14, 2018) – Two notable state politicians recently visited the College of Saint Elizabeth. Both Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, chair of the New Jersey General Assembly's Higher Education Committee and Senator Nellie Pou, vice-chair of the New Jersey Senate's Higher Education Committee, met with students and college leadership to discuss the importance of independent higher education.

"It was an awesome experience," says Damara Banton, '20. "They took the time to listen to our stories and hear about how much CSE means to all of us."

Jasey, who represents the 27th legislative district of New Jersey, has been serving in the General Assembly since 2007. In 1997, Pou became the first woman and the first person of Hispanic descent to represent the 35th legislative district in the New Jersey General Assembly. In 2012, she assumed her position in the New Jersey Senate. Both women have spent their careers fiercely advocating for accessible education and believe strongly in supporting students who do not have strong familial or financial support systems.

"Senator Pou and Assemblywoman Jasey are inspirations to all of us," says Taylor Veve, '20. "They have dedicated their lives to giving back to the community."

The meeting included discussions about supporting the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) and The Tuition Aid Grant (TAG). It also introduced Jasey and Pou to CSE Promise, a rigorous program that guarantees eligible students who meet defined criteria the opportunity to obtain a paid six-month internship should they fail to receive either full-time job employment or graduate school admission within six months after their graduation.

"I can confidently say that there are people out there who truly care about the education of young people like myself," says Simone Robinson, '19. "I left the meetings feeling like my voice had been heard."
