CSE Students and Faculty Hold Prom Dress Drive

Morristown, N.J. (April 16, 2018) – Prom is one of the most memorable nights of high school. It's a rite of passage to dance with close friends, take pictures with a sweetheart and dream about what the future holds. Unfortunately, this momentous occasion often comes with a hefty price tag.

"Prom dresses are expensive," says Alexis Bostrom, '18. "Not everyone can afford them because they can cost up to $200 and are usually only worn once."

In order to ensure that many students have a magical prom night, Dr. Nicole Yanoso, an assistant history professor at CSE, hosted a prom dress drive. Yanoso, with the help of Bostrom, the senior class executive board and several students, managed to collect 50 prom dresses that will be donated to the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children (ARFC) in Newark.

"We want to give these children and young adults, who have inherently difficult situations, a chance to just enjoy their school experience," says Yanoso. "Donating these dresses makes it a little bit easier for students not to wonder how they're going to finance prom."

In addition to reducing the monetary cost, these gowns enable teens in the ARFC to feel confident participating in a time-honored tradition.

"Getting a high-quality dress for no cost allows these students to feel both beautiful and included," says Bostrom.

This is the fourth event that Yanoso and her students have hosted to benefit the AFRC in the 2017-18 academic year. It began with a back-to-school drive at the end of summer. In October, they held a Halloween event, complete with pumpkin painting and trunk-or-treating, for children in the AFRC and collected over 400 items of clothing, toys and household supplies for the organization during Christmas!
