Patrols & Escorts

Patrols

During the academic year, a roving patrol vehicle is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Using the security vehicle, the security officer patrols the buildings, parking lots and grounds, issuing tickets to vehicles found to be in violation of parking regulations and arranging for towing when necessary. This security officer also provides mobile radio patrol coverage, checks campus buildings for secured exterior doors, reports doors and locks that are not working properly, records and reports any lighting which is not working, reports all suspicious activities, and any safety issues observed while on interior or exterior patrols.

During times of a Homeland Security National Heightened Alert, access to campus is restricted to the Madison Avenue gate and the services of additional security officers are engaged.

Escorts

When daylight savings time is in effect, there is a walking patrol available to escort students from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.  When daylight savings time ends, a walking patrol is in effect from 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.  In both instances, after 12:00 a.m. and on weekends, the roving patrol officer can escort students if requested.

The function of the walking patrol is to: escort students from building to building and between parking areas and buildings;  concentrate on the areas surrounding the residence halls, Mahoney Library, Santa Maria, Saint Joseph and the Annunciation Center;  escort students from the St. Joseph parking lot to classes or to their residence halls.

Students desiring a security escort must notify the security booth when they arrive on campus. The Officer at the Madison Avenue entrance gate will contact the walking patrol officer to meet the student in the parking lot and walk them to their destination.

The roving patrol officer does provide limited transportation to resident students.  This transportation is limited: to and from FDU after 7:00PM and Drew University for evening classes and use of their libraries; to and from the Convent Station train station with two or more pieces of luggage; and to handicapped students that are on the authorized list provided by the Dean of Students, Office of Disability Services.
