Micheline M. Mathews-Roth, M.D. '56 Mother Xavier Award 1982        A Pure Science major at CSE, Dr. Mathews-Roth graduated in 1961 from New York University Medical School, with honors in microbiology. From 1965-74 she was a Research Associate in Microbiology at Harvard Medical School, and at this same institution, from 1974-83, she was a Principal Research Associate in Medicine. Dr. Mathews-Roth has been an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1983-present. Her medical research has concentrated on the functions of carotenoid pigments and the rare genetic disease known as erythropoietic protoporphyria ("EPP"). She developed what is the FDA-approved treatment for this disease. She has been active in pro-life work, primarily by giving public lectures on fetal development. Dr. Mathews-Roth received the Borden Award for Medical Research from N.Y.U. in 1961, and in 1989 she was elected President of the American Society for Photobiology. She received the Elizabethan Award in 1974 and the Mother Xavier Award in 1982. "My time at St. E's," Dr. Mathews-Roth recalls, "was a fantastic experience!"
