Mary A. Sheehan '13 Mother Xavier Award 1964        Mary graduated with a B.A. in Latin, and later received a Master's degree from the University of Rochester. A career educator, Mary first taught seventh and eighth grade English. Later she taught high-school classes, then moved up to become Vice-Principal at several schools, before being named Principal of Monroe High School in 1947, the first woman to be appointed to that post. Mary also taught college-level classes during the summers at the University of North Carolina and at the University of Rochester. She served as President of both the Rochester Teachers Association and the New York State Teachers Association. Her civic activities included membership on the Board of Directors of the Day Care Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children; membership on the Ralph Bunche Scholarship Committee of the NAACP; membership on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Youth Organization; membership on the Professional Ethics Committee of the National Education Association. Mary received honorary doctorates from Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College; she also received the American Legion Civic Award and the YMCA Service to Youth Award.
