CSE to Host Draw-A-Thon, March 15, 2008

Do you have an interested in drawing; want to immerse yourself for a day sketching from live models, trying new drawing techniques, challenging yourself on the computer, or learning some beginning approaches to line and shading? If so, attend the Draw-a-thon that will take place from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at CSE.

Organized by the College’s Art Department, the all-day event will be held in the CSE Annunciation Center on campus. According to Dr. Virginia Fabbri Butera, chairperson of the CSE Art Department and director of the CSE Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery, the day is designed for professional and amateur artists as well as those new to art.

“The event is designed to be informative and productive; a chance for young and experienced artists alike to have fun and interact with each other,” explains Dr. Butera. “It also is a way of introducing the College’s Art Department: its faculty, new studios and art gallery, to all those in the outside community interested in the visual arts,” she adds.

The cost for attending is $10 for students; $20 for adults. For more information or to make reservations, contact Dr. Butera, at (973) 290-4314 or via e-mail at vbutera@cse.edu.  High school students and their teachers who wish to come as part of the College’s Admissions Office program may come for free by calling the CSE Women’s College at 1-800-210-7900 or by registering on-line at apply@cse.edu.

Free beverages will be available all day and lunch may be purchased in the College’s cafeteria, located adjacent to Annunciation Center. Participants will have the option of either bringing in their own art supplies or purchasing them through Newark Art Supply, which will be on-site that day.

Attendees that day will enjoy live music as CSE Art Department faculty members will be on-hand to oversee live models in long and short poses; demonstrate new ways of drawing with unusual materials; offer tips on capturing still life arrangements in pencil or charcoal; and help you experiment with computer drawing.

The event features:

  • Elaine Chong, assistant professor of Art and co-organizer of the event, whose collage drawings of handmade paper, copper wire, encaustic wax, and oil paint are currently on display in the CSE art exhibition, “Line, Gesture, Space” in the Therese A. Maloney Art gallery. She will be teaching experimental techniques.

  • Todd Doney, adjunct professor of Art, who teaches landscape and figure painting at CSE and also at several area colleges within the state including New Jersey City University, County College of Morris, and Gibbs College. He will supervise figure drawing.

  • Sr. Anne Haarer, associate professor of Art, whose mural paintings of “Seasons of Learning,” are hanging in the Annunciation Center front lobby. She will be supervising the still life area and conducting beginning instruction.

  • Will Suarez, adjunct professor of Art and co-organizer of this year’s event. He will supervise gesture and formally posed models.

  • Raul Villarreal, adjunct professor in Graphic Design and founder of Villarreal Studio in Verona, N.J. He will oversee computer drawing, using the College’s new dual boot Mac computers.
