Behind Criminal Minds: CSE Holds Forensic Psychology Symposium, Oct. 20, 2007

A behind-the-scenes look at “CSI” (crime scene investigation) is coming to Morristown this fall – specifically on the 200-acre campus of the College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE) at 2 Convent Road. On Saturday, October 20, the College will host an all-day symposium focusing on the role of forensic psychology in the real world of criminal justice – as opposed to the world portrayed on TV and the silver screen.

The all-day event will pull together nationally known professionals who will address topics such as: the psychology of false confessions, the use of polygraph tests, criminal profiling and criminal responsibility. The event coincides with the launch of the school’s new M.A. in Forensic Psychology and Counseling program, the only one of its kind in the state.

“Forensic psychology plays a crucial role in the world of criminal justice,” said Dr. Valerie Scott, director of Graduate Programs in Psychology at CSE. “But, the role we see in the popular media is not necessarily accurate. This seminar goes beyond CSI and criminal minds and debunks the media myths. The session should be enjoyed by all – the general public, as well as mental health and criminal justice professionals.”

Speakers include:
• Katherine Ramsland, Ph.D., “The Facts about Fiction and What Gil Grissom Could Learn about Forensic Psychology.”
• Daniel Greenfield, M.D., “Forensic Psychiatry: Like Nostalgia, Criminal Responsibility Ain’t What It Used To Be.”
• Matthew Johnson, Ph.D. “The Psychology of False Confessions: Two Recently Identified Cases.”
• Jerry Lewis, M.A., “Polygraph: The Truth Lies Within.”
• Louis Schlesinger, Ph.D., “Crime Scene Analysis, Forensic Assessment, Psychological Profiling and a Lot More.”
