Katie Cooper and Subhana Wrights make Senior Night a smashing success with 3-0 vollleyball win over Yeshiva

Morristown, N.J. – Saint Elizabeth outside hitter Katie Cooper and middle hitter Subhana Wrights had a combined 25 kills as the Screaming Eagles women’s volleyball team defeated Yeshiva 3-0 in non-conference action Tuesday during the team’s Senior Night celebration.

Saint Elizabeth (17-7) won by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-15 to set a new program record for victories in a season.

The athletic department honored three Screaming Eagle seniors: Zuliema Molina, Nashlly Sokoli and Misato Oya prior to the first serve.  Each senior received flowers and a gift from their coaches and teammates.

The first set started out with a battle of points between the Maccabees and Eagles.  The Eagles tied up the score at 10-10 before they took the lead 18-12. Molina came in to serve and extended the lead to 21-13.  Katie Cooper had two solid kills to bring the Eagles within one point of a set victory.  Kiara Francisco closed the set with a final kill.

The second set began in the Eagles’ favor 5-1 as Amy Cooper served three service aces and Francisco had a solo block. Wrights added two blocks up at the net to give the Eagles the 13-1 lead.  Tough offensive attacks extended the lead for the Eagles.  Yeshiva gained a few points in return on defensive errors from Saint Elizabeth.  Amy Cooper had another three service aces to run the Eagles’ advantage to 21-7 and  Saint Elizabeth finished off the set with a 25-10 score.

The final set got rolling when Oya had a kill of an Amy Cooper set and the Eagles took a 9-3 lead.  Rachel Hausler then served up two aces and Amanda Inacio came off the bench for an additional service ace to extend the 5-0 run to put the Screaming Eagles up, 15-6.  The Maccabees rallied back scoring a total of 15 points but the Eagles easily closed out the last set.

Saint Elizabeth broke the previous mark of 16 victories in a season, set in 2011.

Saint Elizabeth travels this weekend to Lancaster Bible for North Eastern Athletic Conference pool play with games at 9 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Eagles play their final home match on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. against Cooper Union. Saint Elizabeth will hold its annual “Think Pink” celebration, again raising awareness for breast cancer research and also honor the victims of breast cancer.
