The College of St Elizabeth's Athletic Department hosted a sign language seminar on Saturday that was presented by the NEAC.
The presentation was given by David Reekers, the Admissions/Athletic Department Liaison at Gallaudet University. Reekers, who is deaf, had two translators to help communicate with the audience. Reekers talked about the challenges one faces being deaf, the struggles he had as a kid, and what he has done to overcome them.
The seminar was hosted by each school in the NEAC and was mandatory for all student-athletes to attend. "It was an overall great experience, and I appreciate the fact I can communicate better with the other members of my conference," said Alessandria DeSapio. Toward the end of the seminar, Reekers taught everyone the alphabet, as well as common sports phrases in hopes they would be able to communicate with players from Gallaudet when they play.
