Lasko powers Screaming Eagles to NEAC win over Morrisville State

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Saint Elizabeth sophomore forward Valerie Lasko had a goal and an assist as the Screaming Eagles rolled to a 3-0 win over visiting Morrisville State Sunday afternoon in North Eastern Athletic Conference women’s soccer action at Jersey Knights Complex.

Sophomore Christina Rios and senior Cassidy Crane also scored for Saint Elizabeth, who improved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the NEAC.

Lasko combined with Rios to open the scoring for Saint Elizabeth in the 13th minute. Lasko made a run down the right side of the field and lofted a deep cross to the far left post where Rios volleyed home her first goal of the season.

Morrisville nearly even the score in the 23rd minute but CSE goalkeeper Catherine De La Cruz made a big save on the right side of her net. The Morrisville forward had just taken a long pass to the side of the box and just as she uncurled a shot, De La Cruz smothered the ball.

The Screaming Eagles, who had a 7-3 shot advantage in the first half, scored again right before the intermission. Crane made a long run from the back of the midfield and outran the Morrisville defense to the ball on the right side of the penalty area. Her shot beat the Morrisville goalkeeper to the left side of in the 45th minute for Crane’s fourth score of the season.

De La Cruz’s big save in the first half came with a price: she injured her leg on the play and was forced to the bench in the 54th minute with two saves to her credit. Crane made an emergency appearance in net for Saint Elizabeth and went on to post a pair of saves.

Lasko gave Saint Elizabeth plenty of breathing room on the scoreboard seven minutes later. The fleet forward gained possession of the ball from two Morrisville defenders just outside the penalty box and made a quick chip shot that beat the goalkeeper in the top corner of the net at 60:21.

It was the third score of the season for Lasko and moved her into third on the team with seven points.

Saint Elizabeth continues its five-game home stint on Thursday, Sept. 27 with a 3 p.m. non-conference match against Cedar Crest at Soccer Centers.
