Amerisse Rodgers scored the game winning field goal with 10 seconds remaining, to give the Eagles their first ever victory over SUNYIT, 85-83 on Sunday.
The Eagles found themselves trailing by as much as 18 in the first half. SUNYIT went on a 15-0 run late in the first half, to open up a 33-17 lead. Danesha Triplett ended the run by knocking down back to back jumpers, to cut the lead to 33-21. Ashley Pledger knocked down a jumper with 3:50 remaining in the half, and then followed that up with a steal and an assist to Rodgers, leading to a SUNYIT timeout. Despite digging themselves into a deep hole, the Eagles found themselves trailing 42-34 at halftime.
The second half started off much better for the Screaming Eagles. Cheyenne Grant knocked down a 3 pointer to cut the lead to 52-51. Pledger followed it up with a steal, and a breakaway layup, to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 53-52. Both teams traded buckets for the majority of the half, finding themselves tied up at 66 with 7 minutes remaining in the game. With the game tied at 80 and a minute remaining, Amerise Rodgers sank a clutch jumper to put the Eagles up by 2. SUNYIT hit 2 free throws with 23 seconds remaining to square the game up at 83. With 10 seconds remaining, Rodgers drove to the basket, and made the layup, giving the Eagles the 85-83 victory.
All 5 starters finished in double figures for the Eagles, including Ashley Pledger who led the way with 20 points. The Eagles return to action on Monday when they host Ramapo College at 7 P.M
