A Moveable Feast: Art, Food and Migration Art Exhibition Opens at the College of Saint Elizabeth

Public Invited to Artist's Reception, February 13, 2014
Exhibition on Display until May 4, 2014

Morristown, N.J. (January 29, 2014) – A new art exhibition, A Moveable Feast: Art, Food and Migration, opens at the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery in Annunciation Center at the College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE), 2 Convent Road, Morristown, N.J., on Thursday, February 13, 2014, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. The opening will be followed by a panel discussion in Dolan Performance Hall in Annunciation Center on campus from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. with artists as well as a cultural and a food historian. The show examines the intricate relationship between food, travel, migration and cuisine-related rituals as observed by contemporary painters, sculptors, photographers, and mixed media and video artists. All events are free and open to the public.

The exhibition will be on view through May 4, 2014 and includes the work of 33 artists from six states including California, Florida, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and three countries including England, Israel, and the United States.

Virginia Fabbri Butera, Ph.D., Director of the Maloney Art Gallery and a co-curator of the exhibition notes that, "In art, the depiction of food and eating, may be found in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman art but takes on a more important and metaphoric emphasis in Renaissance, Baroque and Modern still life paintings. Today, as artists travel, change continents and discover new ingredients, recipes and customs from other countries or re-discover the flavors of their heritage, they are incorporating their experiences in works that highlight social, political, class and culture-related issues and observations that subtly or openly show the continuing global mix present in contemporary societies."

Raúl Villarreal, co-curator and Assistant Professor of Art at CSE, who also has a work in the show remarks, "The artists present images that are both humorous and serious. The works reveal an exciting gastronomical journey of personal perspectives that will make you realize how intricately food, cooking and eating are entwined with who we are."

The Gallery is open TuesdayWednesdayThursday and Sunday, 2:00 – 6:00 pm and by appointment. The Gallery will be closed for vacation on February 18th, March 8 -16th, and April 15 – 30th For more information, please contact Dr. Butera at, at 973-290-4314 or visit the website at
