King, Corall make splash as Screaming Eagles kick off season against Wells

MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- CSE senior Kristin King and sophomore Maria Corall were triple-winners on Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph's Hall pool as the Screaming Eagles swimming team opened up its 2012-2013 season against NEAC opponent Wells College.

In a back and forth meet, the Express (3-2) narrowly defeated CSE (0-1) by a score of 52-43.

Despite missing valuable training time after Hurricane Sandy shut down their training facility, the Screaming Eagles jumped out an early 7-0 lead by winning the meet's opening event, the 200 medley relay. Corall, sophomore Veronica Lubsen, sophomore Jennifer Scully and King combined for a winning time of 2:10.25.

King, who missed last season with an injury, made a big statement right away and picked up her second victory in the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle, cruising to victory with a time of 12:15.28.

Wells tied the score to 17-17 after the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle events but CSE jumped back into the lead when Corall won the 200 IM relay in a time of 2:25.10.

After the first break, the Screaming Eagles edged out ahead 32-29 following victories in the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard freestyle. Scully cruised to the butterfly win in a time of 1:15.28 while classmate Corall won the freestyle sprint in 59.19.

Lubsen took second for CSE in the 100 backstroke to make the score 35-35 and King's dominate win in the 500 yard freestyle (time of 5:55.56) inched the Screaming Eagles' lead to 40-39.

Despite CSE senior Shannon Tipton taking second in the 100 yard breaststroke, Wells edged ahead 45-43 and then sealed the victory by claiming the top two spots in the final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay.

The Screaming Eagles' next meet will be in New York at John Jay on Thurs., Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. Fans can catch the CSE swim team locally on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Drew Invitational in Madison.
