SAAC lends a helping hand with Special Olympics

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at the College of Saint Elizabeth teamed up with the Special Olympics of New Jersey to host the 2012 North Sectional Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

The Special Olympics of New Jersey hosted its’ annual basketball competition at neighboring Fairleigh Dickinson University as well as the College of Saint Elizabeth.  The North Division has different levels ranked competitively 1 through 5.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III has partnered up with the Special Olympics to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes.
 

To help run the tournament run smoothly on Saturday, the student-athletes kept score, operated the clock and presented medals to the Special Olympic athletes.  The CSE athletes were able to interact and cheer on the Special Olympians.  A group of their peers also cheered the participants on from the stands. 

The SAAC board at Saint Elizabeth consists of the following members:  junior president Kelly O’Dell (soccer, basketball, softball); sophomore vice president Amy Cooper (volleyball, tennis); freshman secretary Alesandria DeSapio (softball) and senior treasurer Patricia Yagecic (soccer, basketball, softball).
