Commencement Speeches

Gwen-Marie Moolenaar, Ph.D., '62, was given the dual honor of delivering this year's commencement address and receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree, Honoris Causa.

Dr. Moolenaar also has the distinction of being the first black female in the U.S. to be awarded the Ph.D. in Neurophysiology, from Indiana University.

Read an excerpt from her speech below.

"I am delighted, honored and humbled at being granted an honorary doctorate degree today, especially for being included among such achievers as Dr. Marino and Dr. McGlone. Being selected to give the commencement address, while a great privilege, brought with it some anxiety for me.

Dear graduates, you and I have come from a different College of Saint Elizabeth, from different generations, even speak a different language. Fifty years ago I sat over in the Greek Theatre to receive my diploma with 125 other graduates. The class was all female. My family and I were the only black people there.

Today, I am thrilled to see the diversity and so many graduates as I look out among you."

Shannon Tipton was this year's Women's College student speaker. Shannon earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music with a minor in Psychology.

"We will find strength and love in the bond we have as sisters as we continue to support and walk together towards our dreams and ambitions. And we know that we will always have our family at the College of Saint Elizabeth tying us together to the sisterhood and legacy that we will forever share.

We are the College of Saint Elizabeth, we are sisters, and we are the Class of 2013."

Bernadette M. Cardillo‚ RN‚ CCRN‚ CPAN was this year's adult student speaker. Bernadette earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

"Each adult student graduating today is living proof that it is never too late to re-invent your life. The door was open for us; all we had to do was muster up enough courage to step through it. And here we are today celebrating a great achievement.

We leave here today with more than just a great education. You see, we learned something that you can't get from reading a book, and it doesn't come from attending just any college.

What we take with us are life values that will guide us through this diverse world in which we live - values that transcend social, cultural, and ethnic boundaries - values such as love, mutual respect, and selfless service to those in need. We express these values because people, all people, hold a special place in creation. Human beings have an absolute, intrinsic value which makes them priceless."
