Overview

Flowing from the mission of the College of Saint Elizabeth, the mission of the Global Studies Program is to provide students with the appropriate interdisciplinary knowledge and perspectves needed to comprehend and succeed in our increasingly complex and interdependent world.

B.A. in Global Studies

Requirements

The Global Studies major consists of 33 credits, including 12 credits of Core Requirements and 21 credits in one of three Track options: World Politics, Modern Language Studies, World Cultures.

All majors must complete the following courses:

  • ECO 121: Geography andWorld Economy

  • PS 251: Comparative Politics

1. World Politics Track
Historical Perspectives: (Choose 3)

  • HIS 255: Latin American History
  • HIS 261: The Middle East
  • HIS 265: Asian History
  • HIS 271: African History
  • HIS 351: American Diplomatic History
  • HIS 320: Advanced Readings: Asian History
  • HIS 325: Advanced Readings: Latin American and African History
  • HIS 330: Advanced Readings: European and Middle Eastern History

 

Politico-Economic Perspectives: (Choose 2)

  • BUS 341: Managing in the Global Environment
  • ECO 107: Principles of Economics II
  • ECO 331: Political Economy of Asia
  • PS 381: Political Thought


Complete two foreign-language courses beyond what the student must take to complete the general education requirement in this subject area.


2. Modern Language Studies Track
Language Studies Track is designed for students who want to engage in intensive study of a foreign language or languages, within the broader context of international relations and affairs. Students who choose this track take 21 credits of coursework in either a single foreign language or in two foreign languages. At least 6 credits of 300-level coursework must be taken.

 

3. World Cultures Track
Students must take 15 credits from among the courses below, with at least one course from each category. At least 6 credits of 300-level coursework must be taken.

    • Foreign Language course taken beyond fulfillment of the general-education Requirement in this subject area
    • 300-level Foreign Language course

     

    3.World Cultures Track

    • Two courses chosen from list of courses in this Track
    • 300-level course chosen from list of courses in this Track
    • One modern language course beyond what the student must take to complete the general education requirement in this subject area.

     

    Capstone Experience:

    Majors must complete a 20-page primary source-based research paper on a topic pertinent to the broad field of Global Studies. Completed as part of the Global Studies Capstone Seminar, these papers should address the principal factual data, historical events, problems, and ongoing challenges and concerns relevant to the subject selected. Students in the Modern Language Studies Track must also complete a 5-page summary of their papers in the language or languages they have been studying.
