CERT-ified Ready

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, disaster medical operations and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Incident Command Structure(ICS). FEMA has a structured 20 hour training course for citizens interested in joining their Community Emergency Response Team where they live or where they work.  Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The College of Saint Elizabeth has a registered CERT team recognized by the State of New Jersey Office of Emergency Management(OEM).  Our team consists of 53 trained community members ready to act at a moment's notice if needed for an emergency or special event.

Building Marshals

A subset of our CERT team members is a group known on campus as the Building Marshals.  The Building Marshals are trained and equipped to deal with a variety of emergencies that can occur and assist in ensuring the safety and welfare of the members of the CSE campus community.  Building Marshals need to be prepared to react to any of the possible "Hazards" that can occur at any time on campus.  Some of these potential emergencies are: fire/smoke, bomb threat/suspicious objects, utility emergency, including gas leak, toxic substance, hostile intruder/suspicious person, lockdown, disturbance, criminal activity, light search and rescue, and sick/injured person.

The building marshals are staff and faculty volunteers that are interested in providing emergency assistance within the building they reside or within the college campus in general.  This group meets monthly for training, discussions and exercises.

If you are interested in the FEMA training and/or volunteering as a building marshal on campus, please contact the Security Manager at (973) 290-4290.

For our current Building Marshal team members, CERT Training Videos are available to view as a part of the initial training or to use as a supplemental refresher at any time.  There are eight videos available for viewing on the CERT website.  Just click on the link above and it will take you there.  "CERT in Action" is an excellent video to watch if you are interested in taking the CERT training and/or joining the CSE Building Marshal program.
