CSE/RU Social Emotional Learning Credentialing Project

Credentialing Project

Patricia Heindel, Ph.D., Director of the Center for Human and Social Development, has partnered with Maurice Elias, Ph.D. of Rutgers University on a project to create a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Character Development (CD) online credentialing program for school professionals to develop the competencies designated as essential for:

  • Direct Classroom Instruction for SEL and CD,
  • Instructional Leadership for SEL and CD to train other staff in a school and/or after school program,
  • School-Focused Coordination for school leaders to be able to integrate SEL and CD school-wide,
  • District-Focused Coordination for district leaders to be able to integrate SEL and CD district-wide.

The project is being supported by a grant from NoVo Foundation which is committed to children's social emotional learning.

The first two courses will be offered through Rutgers University and the last two courses will be offered through CSE. An additional goal is the formation of a National SEL Credentialing Council which will receive applications for and grant the credentials for each of the four levels.

We are developing the School-Focused Coordination coursework first and anticipate offering that course of study at CSE beginning mid-fall of 2014. The courses will be delivered fully online.
